You might be thinking: Wait, hasn’t Freshly always offered gluten-free meal delivery? The answer: Yes! But we’re excited to announce that we’ve been officially certified gluten-free by the Gluten Intolerance Group, making Freshly the largest fresh-prepared-meal delivery company to be officially certified.
Nothing has changed about our actual meals and ingredients—we always have (and always will!) use real, whole, nutrient-dense foods that are naturally gluten-free (think: high-quality proteins, healthy fats, fiber-rich carbohydrates, and veggies of course).
But with this distinction, our customers can rest assured that our ingredients and facilities meet the highest gluten-free standards. Keep reading to learn more about the certification process and why going gluten-free (if you haven’t already) is a great idea.
Why did Freshly become certified gluten-free?
“We want our customers to know that with our food, you’re getting gluten-free meals you can trust,” says Freshly co-founder Carter Comstock. “This is so important, especially if you’re following a strict gluten-free diet. It can be hard to eat out because of cross-contamination concerns.”
Gluten-free certification requires an additional step above and beyond the FDA’s gluten-free regulations and a stricter standard for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. All of our suppliers must certify that their ingredients are gluten-free, and our facility will be audited regularly to make sure we’re in compliance.
Why is Freshly gluten-free in the first place?
“Eliminating gluten creates more room on your plate for good-for-you foods, like nutrient-dense veggies or complex carbs,” says Comstock. “It was a natural fit with our food philosophy, which eliminates ultra-processed foods and artificial ingredients from your diet.”
Let’s back up a bit. What is “gluten” anyway?
Gluten is a protein found in wheat and other grains that provides the elastic, glue-like texture that makes bread fluffy and soft. But gluten isn’t just found in grains: It can also be hidden in soups, sauces, dressings, and even soy sauce.
While gluten is a naturally occurring protein, it can trigger minor irritations in some people’s bodies. Eliminating gluten has helped improve digestion, skin appearance, energy levels, and focus for some people.
Of course, if you have a specific medical condition or health goal, we recommend that you talk to your doctor to determine if Freshly’s meals are right for you.
I don’t think I have a gluten allergy or intolerance. Can I still eat Freshly?
Definitely! And don’t worry: You won’t miss out on any of the nutrients found in your favorite gluten-containing foods. Our fresh prepared meals are loaded with nutrient-dense ingredients like quinoa, rice, and a variety of veggies.
Does gluten-free mean healthy?
Nope. Just because a box of cookies is labeled “gluten-free,” that doesn’t mean it’s healthy. There’s a good chance those cookies are still loaded with sugar and processed ingredients making them quite the opposite.
At Freshly, we’re committed to bringing you delicious, gluten-free food without all of the junk (read: processed ingredients and unhealthy additives).
Does your gluten-free food taste good?
Absolutely! We believe food should be as delicious as it is nutritious. In fact, that was one of the founding principles of Freshly.
“As a gluten-free consumer myself, I know how challenging it can be to find meals that are satisfying,” explains Comstock. “Our goal is to show you that you can have your (gluten-free) cake and eat it, too.”
