If you’ve tried our plant-based Shepherd’s Pie, you’re in for a treat. We’re taking our Masterful Mash potatoes and using them as a shortcut to achieve the ultimate, meaty Shepherd's Pie. Before we get into all that recipe goodness, let’s begin with an origin story.
The History of Shepherd’s Pie
There’s no secret where Shepherd’s Pie got its start. (Hint: It’s somewhere over the rainbow.) Yep—this satisfying pot o’ gold, also called cottage pie, was first cooked up in Ireland. In 18th century Europe, money was a little tight for the common folk. The pies were deemed peasant food, usually filled with leftover lamb scraps, mutton, potatoes, and wilting veg. This dish was deliciously cost-effective and definitely deserving of the hype.
Our Masterful Mash
Cooking Shepherd’s Pie from scratch is a pretty lengthy process. Our Masterful Mash alone takes us about 45 minutes to prepare! Which is why we usually love doing it for you. In this exercise, we’re encouraging you to get creative and cut corners—with our culinary help, of course. Shepherd’s Pie typically sits on a pillowy bed of homemade mashed potatoes. In this recipe, we’re making life easier by using our ready-made Masterful Mash. Russet potatoes, carb-smart cauliflower, creamy greek yogurt, and diced chives make up this masterful spin on a mealtime essential. Not only will your pie be done in no time, but it’ll also be all the more nutritious. Ok, let’s do this.
