Bowls are everywhere these days: Acai bowls, burrito bowls, grain bowls, poké bowls, Buddha bowls—you get the picture. So what’s the deal, why are they showing up at every restaurant and in everyone’s Instagram feed?
For starters, who doesn’t love a one-and-done meal? Sitting pretty at the intersection of health and convenience, bowls generally are comprised of multiple food groups that provide diverse macronutrients (aka carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) and micronutrients (think: vitamins and minerals).
Each one of these is essential for sustained energy, satiety, and overall health. Beyond their nutritional value, bowls are super convenient (bring them anywhere!) and a great way to avoid sad lunch syndrome.
But you can’t just throw any old food in a bowl! While developing our new “Better Bowls” line, Freshly’s nutritionists and chefs spent countless hours devising the best formula of veggies, carbs, protein, and healthy fats. The result? A delicious, well-balanced bowl.
A healthy diet is built on a foundation of colorful veggies. Here at Freshly, we apply this thinking when we choose the ingredients for our bowls our bowls: Each one features a variety of vegetables, including broccoli, carrots, zucchini, spinach, and eggplant.
A staple of any nutritious meal, complex carbohydrates from whole grains, beans, and starchy vegetables are rich in fiber, protein, and an array of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
We use grain blends, like quinoa and brown rice or greens and grains, for a nutrient boost—and skip all highly processed carbs or refined grains (like white rice)
Our bowls wouldn’t be complete without protein: Our meals feature protein sourced from both animals—beef and chicken—and plants including beans, grains, and legumes. When it comes to plant-based proteins, we ensure complete sources, which deliver all of the essential amino acids that your body needs to function at its best.
The healthy fats
Fats, like carbs, get a bad rap. But healthy fats, like mono- and poly- unsaturated fats, are critical for energy production, brain function, vitamin absorption, and a slew of other important bodily functions—they also keep you fuller for longer. That’s why we add ingredients like nuts, almond butter, and seeds to our bowls.
Our chefs craft clean (meaning no chemical additives), custom-made sauces to complement each bowl’s flavor profile. Rather than acting as sneaky sources of sugar, these sauces pack a one-two punch: Cooked with veggies and antioxidant spices so they’re nutritious, we amp up taste with zesty ingredients like tahini, paprika, lemongrass, poblano peppers, and coconut sap.
What's not in our bowls
In addition to the 85 banned ingredients we never include in our meals, the recipes for our bowls minimize empty calorie foods. For example, sauces can be sneaky sources of sugar, preservatives and flavor enhancers, so we use honey and maple syrup in our dressings, and use the minimum amount possible.
Our bowls will be available to our East Coast customers for the rest of the year, launching nationally in 2020. Up first, we have the Coconut-Curry Chicken Bowl, Smoky Pork Cubano Bowl, Chili-Lime Beef Bowl, Mediterranean Green Chickpea Bowl, and Almond-Ginger Chicken Bowl.
